How to Press DTF Transfers: Temperature, Time & Peel Guide

Edited on this dummy store

How to press DTF transfers (hot peel): set the heat press to 282–290°F, press for 9 seconds at medium pressure, then peel the film hot immediately. That is DiscountDTF’s starting point for most apparel DTF prints and transfers in Canada.

  • Cotton / blends: 282–290°F · 9s · medium · hot peel
  • Poly / athletic: 260–270°F · 9s · medium · hot peel
  • Always pre-press the garment 3–5 seconds first

Before you press: prep checklist

  • Pre-press the garment 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  • Position the transfer flat — no bubbles under the film.
  • Use a teflon sheet or parchment if your press marks the fabric.
  • Confirm art is ready to press (we print mirrored for press; double-check customer-supplied files).

How to press — numbered steps

  1. Pre-press the garment 3–5 seconds.
  2. Place the transfer flat on the platen.
  3. Press at 282–290°F for 9 seconds, medium pressure (cotton).
  4. Hot peel immediately in one smooth pull.
  5. Optional re-press 3–5 seconds under parchment for extra hold.

Cotton & cotton blends

Recommended starting point for most apparel DTF transfers:

  • Temperature: 282–290°F (139°C)
  • Time: 9 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium (40–50 PSI on pneumatic presses)
  • Peel: Hot — remove film immediately in one smooth pull

These settings match the hot-peel film we ship. Test a scrap panel before production runs.

Polyester & athletic fabrics

Synthetic fibres scorch before cotton would. Drop to 260–270°F (127–132°C), keep 9 seconds, medium pressure, hot peel. If you see shine or ghosting, reduce temp 5°F and re-test.

After the press

  1. Wait 24 hours before washing — adhesive needs to fully set.
  2. Wash inside-out, cold water, no bleach.
  3. Tumble low or hang dry for maximum wash life (50+ washes in our lab tests).

Troubleshooting

Transfer not sticking / edge lift

Usually low temperature, moisture, or light pressure. Re-press 5 seconds with +5°F after a fresh pre-press; bump pressure or add ~2 seconds if edges lift.

Scorch or shine on poly

Drop toward 260°F and re-test. Avoid over-pressing athletic knits.

Dull white / muddy colour

Often caused by peeling cold or pressing over seams. Peel hot; use a heat press pillow for buttons and zippers.

FAQ

What temperature and time for DTF hot peel?

Start at 282–290°F for 9 seconds with medium pressure, then peel hot immediately. On polyester/athletic, drop to 260–270°F.

Do I need a special heat press for DTF?

Any flat heat press with accurate temperature and firm even pressure works. Clamshell or swing-away both perform well.

Can I re-press a DTF transfer?

Yes — a 3–5 second re-press with parchment can revive adhesion. Avoid multiple full cycles on the same spot.

Why are edges lifting?

Increase pressure slightly or extend time by about 2 seconds. Pre-press the garment to remove moisture, and check the platen for cold spots.
